Christmas in Charles Dickens’ Rochester — Five Dates Only
There’s something special about Rochester at Christmas: the twilight glow on the cobbles, the High Street lights flickering to life… and the unmistakable feeling that Dickens is never too far away.
This December, I’m running just five guided tours exploring the real — and often surprising — story behind why Christmas mattered so much to him, how Rochester shaped his most festive scenes, and what it really took to drag A Christmas Carol into the world. (Spoiler: the process was almost as tortuous as Scrooge’s night with the spirits.)
Along the way, we’ll uncover the hidden-in-plain-sight links between Dickens, the season, and the city he loved — suitable for all ages, whether you’re a lifelong fan or simply looking for something magical to do while working off the Christmas Turkey.
We’ll also dip into the best (and worst!) screen versions — including one unexpected family favourite that even Dickens’ great-great-great grandson, Gerald Dickens, ranks among the finest.
Tours start at 2.30pm on 22nd, 27th, 28th, 29th & 30th December — ending just as the Christmas lights sweep down Rochester High Street.
